Nominator's project description

Prof. Jiri Bicak is well known internationally for his research in general relativity theory and related astrophysical topics. He has made important contributions to the theory of the formation of black holes through gravitational collapse and various properties of black holes. Partly in connection with this work he constructed models of systems emitting gravitational waves. Prof. Bicak is the leading figure in the efforts to use exact solutions of Einstein's field equations to illustrate characteristic consequences of general relativity which, in realistic cases, can be treated only approximately or numerically. During his stay in Germany, Prof. Bicak intends to extend the last mentioned work and to elaborate a class of relativistic gravitational fields with a special symmetry related to particle motion as well as gravitational waves; he is co-organizing a workshop on these questions, to be held at the Einstein Institute next January. Prof. Bicak combines a large variety of mathematical methods with intuitive physical insight.
