Nominator's project description

Professor Buchanan has made a series of major discoveries that are fundamental to our understanding of the biochemistry of plant metabolism. He established the ferredoxin-thioredoxin system as a mechanism for the light mediated redox regulation of the enzymes involved in carbon dioxide fixation during photosynthesis. These studie s defined that light was not only the energy source for the photochemical reactions, but plays a key role in regulating central enzymatic reactions in the carbon dioxide fixation cycle (Calvin-cycle). In Germany, Professor Buchanan will address questions concerning the redox regulation of intracellular protein trafficking and of storage carbohydrate metabolism.
