Nominator's project description

Professor Shude Mao from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. Professor Mao is a leading astrophysicist who is well known internationally for his innovative studies of gravitational lensing by stars and galaxies. He was the first to show how the detailed internal structure of galaxies can be inferred from the way their gravity magnifies the images of background quasars. In Germany he intends to test his techniques on virtual images produced from computer simulations of the dark matter distribution around galaxies.
