Nominator's project description
| Professor Dr. Ulrike Tillmann is an international authority in the study of the homotopy theory of mapping class groups, cobordism categories and moduli spaces of algebraic curves. These spaces are of fundamental importance in mathematics, and are central objects of study in algebraic geometry, complex analysis, low dimensional topology, symplectic geometry, and string theory in physics. One highlight is her proof that an appropriate completion of the stable moduli space of Riemann surfaces is a so called infinite loop space. This has been an important step in the program leading to the proof the famous Mumford Conjecture. Prof. Dr. Tillman is hosted by Prof. Wolfgang L\"uck at the Westf\"alische Wilhelms-University at M\"unster from March 2008 until July 2008. We are planning to continue the homotopy theoretical analysis of cobordism categories. |
