Nominator's project description

Professor Hartenstein is an outstanding developmental biologist, anatomist and neurobiologist, who substantially contributed to our understanding of Drosophila embryogenesis. Besides the nervous system, the focus of his research, he has studied, among others, the hematopoetic system. Together with Jose Campos-Ortega he published "The embryonic development of Drosophila", an indispensable benchmark for fly embryologists. In Germany, he will establish a 3D-atlas of the larval fly brain by reconstructions of serial EM sections, which allows the analysis of micro- and macrocircuits.
