Nominator's project description
Professor Yan Yu's work is concerned with novel storage materials for lithium-based batteries. She has achieved significant progress in terms of Li-based battery research through her work on tin and silicon anodes. The tin anodes are particularly worthy of mention. They consist of tin nano-particles incorporated in conducting carbon fibers prepared by electrospinning. This highly interesting morphology leads to an efficient electrochemical coupling of the simultaneously mechanically decoupled metal particles. Whilst usual tin anodes rapidly degrade because of the severe volume changes upon lithium storage, these materials show high stability and excellent storage behaviour. |
