Nominator's project description

Professor Beers is one of the pioneers and a leader of research on the most metal-poor and hence oldest stars of the Milky Way. Using wide-angle telescopes, he has conducted systematic searches for these objects, which changed our understanding of how the Universe was enriched with the chemical elements. Professor Beers is an expert in statistical methods and automated data analysis, as well as on nuclear astrophysics. During his stay in Germany, he will work on the analysis of previous survey discoveries, and on the preparation of new sky surveys for metal-poor stars. Professor Beers is hosted by Professors Norbert Christlieb, Eva Grebel, and Andreas Quirrenbach at the Centre for Astronomy of Heidelberg University.
