Nominator's project description

Dr. Alexander Tsirlin from the Chemeurope National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics, Tallinn, Estonia Electrons in solids are strongly entangled. This effect known as electronic correlations manifests itself at low temperatures and results in intriguing properties ranging from superconductivity to the formation of topologically protected states. Dr. Alexander Tsirlin came to the field from solid-state chemistry. He prepared new strongly correlated oxides in Moscow State University and later developed interest in characterizing their low-temperature behavior from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. As Humboldt postdoctoral fellow in Dresden and subsequently as research group leader in Tallinn, he worked on experimental investigation and microscopic modeling of quantum and frustrated magnets. In Augsburg he will combine experimental and theoretical as well as physical and chemical insights in order to find new strongly correlated systems, where metallic and insulating states compete. Goal of the project is to tune these materials on the verge of electronic or magnetic instabilities, thus enabling superconductivity and exotic electronic phases to emerge. Dr. Alexander Tsirlin is hosted by Professor Philipp Gegenwart at the University Augsburg.
