Nominator's project description

Professor del Valle is well known internationally for his outstanding research regarding language ideologies in Spanish historical linguistics and dialectology as well as related language policy and identity development in Spain and Latin America. He has made important contributions to a theoretical framework grounded in the concepts of heteroglossic and monoglossic cultures as well as to the principles of focalization and convergence for the analysis of linguistically based identities. Professor del Valle combines a large variety of methods, sharing ideas with ethnographers and quantitative sociolinguists in order to gain a broader theoretical and methodological perspective. During his stay in Germany, he intends to elaborate a political history of the Spanish language as a new dimension in diachronic studies.
