Nominator's project description

Professor Radi is an internationally renowned expert in the field of radical biochemistry. He has made major contributions to the discovery of the cytoxic actions of peroxynitrite. His findings in the biological chemistry, physical biochemistry, mitochondrology, cell biology and pharmacology of nitric oxide and peroxide have revealed a fundamental insight into the actions of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide and peroxynitite in cell dysfunction, apoptotic signaling, lipid oxidation/nitration and post-translational protein modification. These events are relevant to disease processes where inflammation plays a critical role including, atherogenesis, hypertension and neurodegeneration. In Germany he will address the influence of nitration into structural biology even further and explore how and to which extend the nitric oxide pathway plays a role in various diseases.
