Nominator's project description

Fundamental research in photonics and its applications, for example driving the world wide web to ever larger data rates enabling the multitude of social networks and for supercomputing coins the 21st century. Predictions show, that without further research and fast transfer into applications on energy efficient photonic devices the energy consumption of communications and computers will consume all electrical energy produced in the world in future. Prof Lee is one of the world leaders of novel generations of ultrafast and energy efficient photonic devices. His work synergetically embedded in the work of the DFG collaborative research center on NanoPhotonics at TU Berlin will help to create rapid progress in a field of utmost importance for our modern society.
