Nominator's project description

Professor Espagne is internationally known for his outstanding research in the field of cultural transfers concerning both theoretical issues and broad and innovative empirical studies. His publications, originally situated in the field of German Literary Studies, concerning especially the work of Heinrich Heine, have expanded during the last 25 years in a truly interdisciplinary direction towards the study of intercultural mediators and cultural transfers in the fields of the history of science, in translation studies, in philosophy, in art history and in African Studies. During his stay in Saarbrücken he is developing a cooperative research project on knowledge transfers during the colonial period from the African continent to France and Germany.
