Nominator's project description
Prof. Tariq Rahman is an outstanding scholar of sociolinguistics and literature in present-day Pakistan. His numerous publications revolve around issues such as language history, multilingualism, language education and literary historiography in Pakistan and the northern Indian Subcontinent, and he can be credited with authoring a set of front-ranking works on these topics. He has already received a number of highly esteemed awards for his research and publications output. With his wide linguistic expertise and his high academic standards, Prof. Tariq Rahman ideally represents a tradition of unbiased and critical scholarship in present-day Pakistan. While in Germany, Prof. Rahman intends to work on a comparative project about the ideology of names, as well as on an alternative history of Pakistan (especially as reflected in memoirs, biographies and autobiographies). The members of the South Asia Institute (Heidelberg) will assist him in these studies to the best of their abilities, and are certain to derive much honour and benefit from his presence. |
