Nominator's project description

Professor Richet is the leading thermodynamicist of his generation in geosciences. He has greatly impacted our view of geomaterials in general and of the molten state of silicates in particular. His interests and achievements range over such novel topics as the configurational entropy-based theory of viscosity, the phenomenon of pre melting of crystals, the non-Newtonian rheology of magmatic mixtures and the dynamics of volcanic eruptions. He has been a brilliant advocate for quantitative earth sciences. He has authored a benchmark textbook on silicate melts. He is also a great scholar of the history of science and an author of several of its more popular books.
