Nominator's project description
| Professor Stefan Vogenauer of the University of Oxford is an international authority in the fields of comparative private law, legal history, and legal methodology. His two volume treatise on the interpretation of statutes in England and on the Continent constitutes a milestone in comparative and historical research. The results of his research break new ground, particularly in the appreciation of the relationship between the common law- and civil law-traditions. Thus, Professor Vogenauer demonstrates that the approach towards statutory interpretation in both traditions is very similar; in fact, it may be more appropriate to refer to two strands of one and the same tradition. Obviously, this is of paramount significance at a time when we are attempting, once again, to transcend the national boundaries that have shaped the development of law and legal scholarship for too long. During his stay in Germany, Professor Vogenauer intends to deepen his collaboration with the Hamburg Max Planck Institute of Comparative and Private International Law in the fields of comparative and European private law, with a particular focus on the 'Textstufen' in the emerging European law of contract. |
