Nominator's project description

The development of flowers is one of the best understood and economically most important developmental processes in plants. Flower formation relies on the coordinated action of regulatory proteins, so-called transcription factors; these proteins control the spatial and time-dependent activity of myriads of other genes present in the organism. The goal of Dr. Kaufmann´s research is to unravel how one family of such master regulators (namely the MADS-box factors) coordinate cellular differentiation to generate specific floral organ morphologies. While her previous ground-breaking work focused on the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress), Dr. Kaufmann will now extend her studies to two other, closely related plant species, using a combination of cutting-edge genomics- and proteomics-based techniques, in conjunction with biocomputational data analysis. This research will reveal the degree of evolutionary conservation of floral master regulators and how the diversification of their target genes may have contributed to the morphological variation we see in the flowering part of our world.
