Nominator's project description
Professor Akimov has made pioneering contributions to modulating condensed matter systems at frequencies up to the TeraHertz-range by ultrafast acoustics. Thereby ultrashort sound pulses, representing earthquakes on the nanoscale, hit the targeted medium. A wide spectrum of effects could be induced in that way such as modulation of the emission from semiconductor light sources, coherent magnetization precession in ferromagnets or variation of plasmonic resonances, all of which have also great application potential. During his stay in Germany, he intends to elaborate to explore this potential further, for example by tailoring the acoustic pulses. |
