Nominator's project description
Professor Begley is well-known internationally for his outstanding research in the mechanics of materials. He has made important contributions to the understanding of the mechanical performance of small scale engineering systems as well as nanoscale components and has developed versatile tools for their numerical simulation. Combining analysis and numerical simulation, Professor Begley has become a recognized leader in the development of multilayer systems for microelectronic applications, thermal and environmental barrier coatings as well as microfluidic devices. During his stay in Germany, he intends to elaborate the performance of mechanical metamaterials and foams aiming at their structural optimization exploiting size and scale effects. |
