Nominator's project description
Professor Shiue is a leading international researcher in the field of economic history of market development and trade in China. Moreover, she is renown for her unique ability to combine state-of-the-art methods from economic theory and econometrics to relevant questions of economic history. Her path-breaking work on the economy of China in its pre-industrialization era has overturned many long-held assumptions on the extent of the functioning of markets in China at the time. During her stay in Germany she will work on the historical origins of the 'Great Divergence' between the European and Asian economies. |
