Nominator's project description

Professor Shin-ya Koshihara has made major inroads into forging an intellectual bridge between Chemistry and Physics. He has formed exceptionally strong collaborations with chemists to specifically design novel materials, with theoreticians of all stripes to drive theoretical developments in ab initio time dependent methods to unravel experimental observables, and has provided a new picture for understanding transient phenomena in terms of so called hidden states to understand structural dynamics of strongly correlated electron-lattice materials. He has effectively discovered a whole class of materials that can be optically manipulated to exhibit exceptionally large, colossal, changes in macroscopic properties from magnetism to metallic behaviour. Shin-ya Koshihara`s presence in Germany will help lead a transformation in our understanding of strongly coupled electron-lattice systems to induce new states of matter to colossal effect and further strengthen the intellectual links between chemistry and physics in our pursuit for the control of the properties of matter.
