Nominator's project description
| Dr. Pierangelo Buongiorno from the Università del Salento, Lecce, Italy Although the Roman Senate with its extraordinary expertise and authority has shaped the development of the Roman Empire both in political and legal terms, legal historians have not yet been able to present a comprehensive collection of the Senate’s Decrees. Difficulties have been caused mainly because the relevant material is scattered over legal and literary as well epigraphical and papyrological sources. Dr. Buongiorno, having qualified both in Law and also in Classics and Ancient History, is skilled at studying these types of sources. In his thesis he has collected and commented on all Senatorial Decrees from the reign of Emperor Claudius. This has been appreciated as a piece of real scholarship setting the standard for any future work of this kind. Dr. Buongiorno will now dedicate himself to a complete commented collection of the Roman Senate’s Decrees. This long felt desideratum will be invaluable for future research on Roman Law and Politics. Dr. Buongiorno is hosted by Professor Sebastian Lohsse at the University of Münster. |
