Nominator's project description

Professor Griffel is an international authority on Islamic intellectual history. He is particularly well-known for his work on al-Ghazali, a pivotal figure in Islamic theology and philosophy. A particularly significant theme in Griffel's research has been the emergence of a demand for doctrinal orthodoxy in Islam, not least thanks to al-Ghazali himself. During his stay in Germany, Professor Griffel will undertake an inquiry into the methodology and character of developments in the philosophy of post-classical Islam, concentrating on theologian-philosophers in the wake of al-Ghazali, with a focus on the 12th and 13th centuries.
