Nominator's project description

Professor Fabio Tal is an internationally renowned expert on the theory of dynamical systems, which is concerned with analyzing the long-term behavior of mathematical models. He specializes on surface dynamics and has made important contributions to this area by combining methods from ergodic theory, algebraic topology and differential geometry. His results provide deep insights on the interplay of the asymptotic behavior of a system with the topological structure of the underlying phase space. During his stay in Germany, he will attempt to solve a number of well-known conjectures concerning the transition to chaos, the role of rotation vectors and the general classification of long-term behavior in surface dynamics.
