Nominator's project description
Professor Saleh is an international authority in the history of Muslim Qur’anic interpretation. He has made innovative contributions to the study of Islamic intellectual history and opened up new fields of research such as the reception of the Bible in Muslim scholarship and the historiography of Qur’anic exegesis. His rigorous research on edited sources as well as manuscripts has redirected the focus of attention to hitherto marginalised, but eminently important trends and opened up fresh perspectives. In Germany, he will focus on continuities and transformations in the Qur’anic commentary tradition at the onset of the age of print. |
