Nominator's project description

Professor de Silva is a leading expert on the volcanic mountain chain of the South American Andes. In true Alexander von Humboldt fashion, his research is comprehensive and founded on the integration of field work and mapping. His studies of volcanoes in the Central Andes and elsewhere have changed the perception of how the world’s largest magmatic systems behave. During his stay in Germany, he will study the dynamic evolution of magma from the deep mantle to the atmosphere.
