Nominator's project description
| Professor McCready, a leading linguist internationally, carries out ground-breaking studies to develop and test formal models of how language conveys meaning. Her important contributions to theoretical semantics and pragmatics have deepened the understanding of meaning such as speaker certainty and politeness that seem largely independent of the core sentence meaning, but interact with it. In Germany, Professor McCready intends to work on models of types of political speech that carry different messages for different addressees. She will, furthermore, focus on the phenomenon of different registers in language use. |
