Nominator's project description

Professor Ernst is a structural biologist, who is internationally well known for studying the structure of biological macromolecules, in particular proteins, using X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, and electron spin resonance (ESR). He resolved various active states of rhodopsin - the visual pigment in our eyes - for the first time. In Germany, he will focus on the increase in sensitivity of ESR techniques by miniaturization and will kinetically resolve conformational changes in rhodopsin by rapid mixing technique.
