Nominator's project description

Professor Saintilan is an international authority in the field of coastal ecosystems and their response to changing climatic conditions. His expertise spans from geomorphology and landscape development to plant ecology and biogeochemistry. He identified new approaches to wetland management, drawing attention to the benefits of carbon sequestration (“blue carbon”) in coastal wetlands. In Germany, he will work on the role of abiotic and biotic drivers of the carbon cycle in coastal ecosystems, using salt marshes of the Baltic and the North Sea coast as model systems.
