Nominator's project description

Professor Mak is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the study of atomically thin 2D materials and the new physical that they permit. He discovered that the MoS2 monolayer was a direct band-gap semiconductor, quite unlike the corresponding bulk material. The study of 2D materials has grown into a huge worldwide activity and Professor Mak's research has kept defining and re-defining the forefront of the field. During his stay in Germany, he focuses on the development of methods to dynamically control the many-body Hamiltonians and to investigate the quantum many-body dynamics in 2D moiré materials.
