Nominator's project description

Dr Tanner is an international authority on the role of tissue mechanical properties in cancer progression and biophysics-based cancer therapies. She has developed a range of techniques to investigate how cancer exploits tissue mechanics from the single cell to the organ level. Dr Tanner has transformed in vitro single-molecule biophysical tools, such as optical tweezers, to directly probe the physical forces in cancer progression in a living animal, such as the zebrafish, to advance personalised medicine. In Germany, she continues her research into the biophysics of cancer metastasis
