Nominator's project description

Professor Hurley is an international leader in the mechanistic biochemistry and structural and cell biology of autophagy, endosomes and lysosomes. These processes are responsible for the degradation, recycling, and renewal of the contents of cells, and are especially important in protecting neurons from degeneration. In Germany, he will continue a series of collaborations on the structural mechanism of autophagy as reconstituted on synthetic lipid membranes and visualized in cells.
