Some 800 international researchers are meeting in Berlin on 26 and 27 June - livestream of the opening with German Chancellor Merkel

They come from Brazil, China and the United States, from Nigeria and Italy, Mexico and Nepal: nearly 800 researchers from around 80 countries, who are currently guests at German universities, sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation, are expected in Berlin, together with their families. The Humboldt Foundation’s Annual Meeting is an opportunity to get together and share ideas and experiences.

After words of welcome by the Presidents of Freie Universität and the Humboldt Foundation, Günter Ziegler and Hans-Christian Pape, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will open the meeting with a speech at Freie Universität Berlin on 26 June. During the opening ceremony she will also confer the Humboldt Alumni Awards which promote academic and cultural links between Germany and the Humboldt alumni’s home  countries. Before the closing speech by Foundation President Pape, two fellows will report on their experiences in Germany.

On 27 June, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is inviting the Humboldtians to a reception in the grounds of Schloss Bellevue. Prior to this, he will confer the 2019 Philipp Franz von Siebold Award for special services to German-Japanese understanding on the Japanese political scientist Masahiro Noguchi. The afternoon will see lectures, laboratory visits and campus tours at Berlin Adlershof Science City.

Journalists are welcome to attend on both days. There will be photo and recording opportunities, and we will be pleased to arrange interviews. Please register for accreditation by Monday, 24 June, 12 noon and take note of the information required on the answer form (please include date, place and country of birth as well as nationality and send a copy of your press card if you do not have annual media accreditation to the Federal Press Office).
