Language fellowships and German courses

German language courses in your home country before your visit to Germany

As the successful outcome of their visit to Germany also depends on the degree to which fellows speak German, fellows whose knowledge of German is insufficient will be granted an up to two-month language fellowship by the responsible Selection Committee at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to attend an intensive language course at an approved language school in Germany. The language fellowship takes place immediately before the International Climate Protection Fellowship begins. If time constraints or family responsibilities prevent you from making use of a language fellowship in Germany before the start of your fellowship, you have the option to take an online language course abroad for one or two months. This course is less intensive than a language fellowship and can be completed alongside your professional obligations. It always ends before the fellowship begins. We urgently recommend that especially fellows who have little or no prior knowledge of German take advantage of this option.

You may request a language fellowship as part of your application for an International Climate Protection Fellowship or when you accept the fellowship.

Accompanying partners may also be granted a language fellowship or language course on request.

Language fellowship before the start of the introductory seminar

The intensive German language course is held immediately before the introductory seminar and takes place in Bonn for all fellows. The language fellowship cannot be interrupted or taken up after the start of the fellowship in Germany.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation covers the course fees and accommodation costs for the language fellowship, and provides an allowance of 690 Euros a month for meals and other expenses.

Accompanying partners may also be granted the intensive language course preceding the introductory seminar if the fellow submits a corresponding application. They may be awarded a language fellowship under the same conditions. For organisational reasons, accompanying children should however not travel to Germany until you have completed your intensive language course.

German language courses during your International Climate Protection Fellowship

Fellows may also apply to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to request funding for further German language courses (e.g. evening classes or courses at a university) after the fellowship has begun. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will not provide funding for intensive language courses that would cause interruptions to the fellowship.

Applications to cover the cost of German language courses must be submitted to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation before you start the course. Processing usually takes up to 14 days.
