Research stays outside Germany

International Climate Protection Fellows may conduct their fellowship outside Germany during the sponsorship period if this is necessary for the implementation of their academic project or for organisational reasons.

Research stays outside Germany can be used e.g. for field research, archive visits, experiments at specific facilities or collaborations with other research institutions, or conducted for personal or organisational reasons (family obligations, health-related aspects).

The following restrictions apply:

• At least six months of the fellowship must take place in Germany.
• The total duration of sponsorship outside Germany must not normally exceed 25 percent of the total sponsorship period (no more than six months for postdocs, three months for prospective leaders working in the field).
• Research stays outside Germany at the very beginning or end of the fellowship are only permitted in exceptional cases and without ancillary benefits.

Research stays outside Germany must be requested in writing if they are longer than one month. Please submit your application at least three months in advance and expect a processing time of several weeks.

Exception: Europe research stays

If the aforementioned research stay outside Germany takes place in a European country and is associated with a written invitation from a research institution, you may additionally request a flat-rate monthly Europe allowance.

You are however ineligible to receive this allowance if the research stay

• takes place in your country of origin (country where you resided when you applied for the fellowship);
• takes place at the very beginning or end of your fellowship.

Applications for Europe research stays must be made in advance and in writing.
Please submit your application at least three months in advance and expect a processing time of several weeks.
