If you would like to apply for a German Chancellor Fellowship, you will need a contact person at a private or public institution in Germany: your host.
What are the responsibilities of a host?
Hosts are also mentors and will assist you in carrying out your project. At the same time, they also ensure that you have the necessary conditions to successfully carry out your project, for example by providing a suitable workplace. Your host will have a monthly subsidy of €500 at their disposal for any costs arising while conducting the project.
Who can act as a host?
Any natural person with close ties to a public or private institution in Germany (e.g. businesses, associations, public administration, NGOs) can serve as a host. To ensure adequate support, there must be some relation between your host's field of professional expertise and your proposed project in Germany.
What do I need from my host?
Before you can apply for a German Chancellor Fellowship you must coordinate your project with your future host. You will then need both a binding mentoring agreement and an extensive host’s statement (list of questions, PDF) in writing from them. Both documents are essential components of your online application.
How do I find the right host?
Make use of your professional or personal contacts. Do you know anyone who has connections to Germany and could help you find initial points of contact or refer you?
Approach German businesses or organisations in your country that may be able to introduce you to contacts in Germany.
Or contact the alumni association of German Chancellor Fellows in your home country:
Our advice: start looking for a host as soon as possible. Plase remember that July and August are holiday months in Germany.
How do I contact a potential host?
Take your time when writing your application, and persuade your host with a well-worded cover letter. Describe what you hope to achieve with your project and how the fellowship is important for your further career plans. Pique your host’s interest in working with you.
To make it easier for you to contact a potential host, we have compiled a letter for you containing the most important information about the fellowship and the responsibilities and benefits of acting as a host. You are welcome to send this letter to your desired host. Please click here for a translation of this letter.
What if the host of my choice rejects my request?
Be persistent! Don’t be discouraged if you receive a rejection; try again with someone else. If a particular person at an institution is unavailable to act as a host, ask about alternatives. Maybe a colleague would be interested?
