Seeds of change

In January 2026, the participants of the Humboldt Residency Programme 2025 will organise a series of events together with Futurium, the Spore Initiative, and the Salon Sophie Charlotte (BBAW) in Berlin.

Seeds of Change: Harnessing Communities for Sustainable Food Futures

Lecture on January 17, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the Salon Sophie Charlotte

Food production and consumption must be reimagined to become future-oriented, sustainable, and climate-resilient. Only in collaboration with nature can we ensure food security. In this session, you will hear two stories from the Philippines and Brazil, showcasing innovative approaches to reshaping food systems today. These insights into community-based agriculture highlight how the foundations for a sustainable food future are already being laid today. A lecture by Mónica Guerra Rocha (Comida do Amanhã, Brazil) and Mark-David Pintucan (LokalLab, Philippines).

Food Futures: Global Seeds. Berlin Soil

Panel discussion on  January 22, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at the Futurium

The global conversation on the future of food is often shaped by policymakers, corporations, and scientific institutions and making meaningful change in the complex global food systems can seem out of reach. Yet, some of the most innovative solutions to food insecurity and climate challenges emerge from the ground up. Farmers, cooperatives, and community organisers are reimagining what sustainable food systems can look like.

In the form of a panel debate, they will share their innovative and community-driven solutions, while a powerful collection of photo-essays and a taste-testing of their locally produced foods will make those solutions come to life. The event provides a designated space for networking between everyone interested in the future of food and keen to drive change.

Seeds of Change

Workshop with the Spore Initiative on January 24, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.

The transformation of food systems is a global challenge, but the solutions start locally.

Designed for students and youth organisations concerned with food and agriculture, "Seeds of Change" explores how communities can transform food systems from the ground up to be more sustainable, healthy, and equitable. Participants will learn practical organising tools, hear inspiring real-world success stories, and collaborate on creative solutions they can implement in their own contexts.

This hands-on workshop is led by participants of the Residency Programme, who mobilize their communities in Nigeria, the Philippines, and Brazil, to make real progress towards stronger and more sustainable food futures in their part of the world.
