Nominator's project description

Professor Wong is a leading expert in life science research at the interface of organic and medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. His discoveries in the field of enzymatic glycosylations have truly advanced the field enormously. Professor Wong has pioneered the application of enzymes as efficient catalysts for preparative organic chemistry and developed several methods now used world-wide for the enzyme-mediated construction pf complex natural products. More recent work focuses on the formation and studies of most complex glycoproteins thus moving into the area of molecularly-based structure activity relationship in recognition events as well as in fighting or preventing diseases. Presently Prof. Wong holds the office of President of the Academia Sinica in Taipeh. In Germany, joint work with the colleagues from the universities of Konstanz and Hamburg will concern the development in synthesis and analysis of complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates and novel concepts for improved accessibilities of glycoproteins. Professor Chi-Huey Wong is hosted by Professor Joachim Thiem, University of Hamburg, and Professor Valentin Wittmann, University of Konstanz.
