Nominator's project description

Since ancient times the isolation of substances from microorganisms and plants plays an important role in the discovery of new drugs and pharmaceuticals. To meet the requirements of medicinal applications these natural products very often have to be modified and optimized with regard to their molecular architecture. Usually, this goal is achieved through an individual synthetic access for each compound. Mrs Gaich has developed a concept which enables synthetic access to a variety of structurally and biologically different natural products through a single synthetic route. Thereby Mrs Gaich takes advantage of biosynthetic pathways, some of them hypothetic, and re-enacts (mimics) these pathways in vitro. With this fascinating process not only an efficient synthetic access to biologically important compounds is gained, but also fundamental questions regarding the biosynthesis of these complex molecular architectures are answered. Investigation of biosynthetic transformations is an efficient tool to broaden the spectrum of modern synthetic methodology.
