The inaugural Japan-Germany Frontiers of Engineering Symposium will be held in Tokyo, Japan, and is a joint collaboration between the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Volkswagen Foundation, DWIH Tokyo and acatech.

Following the motto “Advanced Materials and Systems for Sustainable Society”, this symposium will aim to promote the overarching discussion from sustainable materials and systems to their practical applications and implementations in society. In particular, two sessions will be organized from two different perspectives: Bottom up from new materials with novel properties and functions to their technological applications, and top down from innovative engineering systems and their requirements to design of necessary materials. This symposium will tackle circular materials and materials systems from different angles with speakers and participants with a broad range of backgrounds, linking research in engineering from academia to industry.
In particular, the symposium will focus on the following topics:

-    Multifunctional and sustainable materials for the future
-    Sustainable engineering systems and their social implementation

The scientific program of the symposium is designed by an organizing committee comprised of two researchers based in Germany and two based in Japan. The Conference Co-Chairs of this symposium are Dr.-Ing. Sarah Fischer, Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP), and Prof. Dr. Akimitsu Narita, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST).

This symposium will bring together 30 of the very best next generation of engineers and researchers from industry, universities, and other research institutions in Germany and Japan to introduce their areas of engineering research and technical work and to discuss exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. The symposium aims to have an interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge and methodology that could eventually lead to the development of cooperative networks of young engineers from both countries.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports scientific collaborations between German and Japanese participants with its dedicated follow-up program CONNECT, which grants financial support for working visits in the partner country for up to 30 days. JAGFOE attendees are also encouraged to become members of the worldwide network of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, e.g. by applying to the various sponsorship programs for international academic collaboration for researchers.

This symposium is part of the Frontiers of Research Programme of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Foundation regularly convenes bi- and tri-national Frontiers of Research Symposia in cooperation with its partner organisations in Brazil, China, Japan, India, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
