The Japanese-American-German Frontiers of Science Symposium brings together approx. 72 outstanding young researchers of various disciplines of natural sciences and social sciences from universities and other research institutions of the three countries to introduce their areas of research and technical work. They exchange ideas across disciplinary and methodological boundaries, build cross-disciplinary networks, and take the opportunity to work on future international collaborations.
The following topics will be discussed:
- Flatland: The Materials Science and Chemistry of Two-Dimensional Materials
- Climate Change and its Effects on Biosphere
- Artificial Scientist: Use of LLMs for Data Science, Literature Review, Reviewing Articles
- Flows and Pattern Formations
- Shrinking Society in Shrinking City? How Demographic Shift Change the Lifestyles in Ageing Societies
- Extreme Life in the Ocean
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports scientific cooperation between participating US and German as well as Japanese and German researchers with its special follow-up programme CONNECT which funds working visits in the partner countries for up to 30 days.
The Japanese-American-German symposia series is a joint undertaking of the National Academy of Sciences, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
This year’s symposium will be hosted by the National Academy of Sciences at the Beckman Center in Irvine, USA. Participation is by invitation only.

This symposium is part of the Frontiers of Research Programme of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Foundation regularly convenes bi- and tri-national Frontiers of Research Symposia in cooperation with its partner organisations in Brazil, China, Japan, India, Israel, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
