3rd UK-German Frontiers of Humanities Symposium: “Mobilities”
This year´s conference draws on the insights of the humanities and social sciences on the theme of ‘Mobilities’, exploring how mobilities have shaped, are shaping, and will shape our environments – both social and natural – and our interaction with them, through time. Mobilities will be explored at the individual, community, and societal level, interrogating not only how senses of mobility – and immobility – influence perceptions of self, but also our engagement and interaction with other forces, including through structures of power and the ways in which power and inequalities inform control of mobilities.
Partners and goals
The UK-German Frontiers of Humanities Symposia (UKGFOH) are a series of interdisciplinary, binational conferences jointly conducted by the British Academy (BA) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH). Funding on the German side is provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
The activity brings together approx. 40 outstanding young researchers of various disciplines from the UK and Germany. They exchange ideas across disciplinary boundaries and take the opportunity to work on future UK-German cooperations. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports such collaborative work with its special follow-up programme "CONNECT" which funds working visits in the partner countries for up to 30 days. The British Academy also provides seed funding to facilitate collaborations that are formed directly from the symposium.
The format is modeled after further bi- and tri-national Frontiers of Research Symposia the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation regularly conducts with Brazil, China, India, Israel, Japan, Turkey and the USA in the natural sciences, engineering and humanities.
