Building trust through networks
“How can we justify and keep trust?” With this question, Hans-Christian Pape, President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, opened the interdisciplinary colloquium on 24 October. He went on to say that global networks, like the ones established by the Humboldt Foundation, are suited to strengthening trust in research: “This is because good and successful science develops in transnational cooperation. It develops in collaborations that also cross intellectual boundaries.”, Pape continued.
The slogan of the colloquium - “Bonds of Trust - Shaping the Sino-German Research Network of the Future” - provides the guiding theme of the lectures, workshops and panel discussions held during the three-day event. The guests invited by the Humboldt Foundation will discuss pressing scientific issues in today’s increasingly globalised world, examine the special opportunities and challenges Sino-German research collaboration brings, and look at the role of the Humboldt Network. Alumni and young researchers attending the colloquium will present their research topics from a wide range of disciplines.
Worldwide and interdisciplinary
Ten years have passed since a Humboldt Colloquium was last held in China. The People's Republic of China is one of the world’s most research-intensive countries. It is also one of the Humboldt Foundation’s most important partner nations and counts among the most successful countries in the Humboldt Foundation’s worldwide network. To date, the Humboldt Foundation has sponsored more than 2,400 researchers from China. The Colloquium is being held at the Kempinski Hotel (Lufthansa Center) in Beijing.
Using interdisciplinary workshops and specialist lectures, Humboldt Colloquia aim to bring Humboldtians into contact with one another as well as with German specialist colleagues. They also provide an opportunity to draw the attention of junior researchers to the Humboldt Foundation’s sponsorship portfolio and to Germany as a location for conducting research. Every year, the Humboldt Foundation organises two major colloquia abroad to which all the alumni from the respective country or region are invited.
The colloquium in Beijing is being held in cooperation with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Beijing, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion, the German Academic Exchange Service, the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres and the Max Weber Stiftung.
