The 33 scouts – 23 men and 10 women – from 26 universities and research institutions were selected from a total of 78 applicants in the first round. Individuals from 46 institutions applied. The University of Münster tops the list with three scouts. The University of Hamburg, University of Gießen, the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München will each have two scouts to recruit young talents to work there as Humboldt Fellows.
Each scout can propose up to three outstanding international junior researchers to receive a fellowship through the Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme. After nominees have been vetted to determine if they fulfil the formal requirements, they will be directly awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship. An ex-post evaluation is conducted once the fellowship has ended.
With the Henriette Herz Scouting Programme, which invited applications for the first time in May, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is opening up a new track to the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme. The programme aims to win over researchers – who have not applied for a Humboldt fellowship for any number of reasons – for collaboration with a research institution in Germany and for the Humboldt Network. Using this approach, the programme particularly seeks to reach new target groups in various disciplines and regions and, at the same time, increase the number of sponsored women in the Foundation’s Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme. The first person a scout proposes should be a female scientist or scholar.
Up to 100 additional research fellowships will be awarded every year through the Henriette Herz Scouting Programme. The second selection round for further scouts will be held in May 2021.
The Henriette Herz Scouting Programme is financed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
