Information for references

If you are providing a letter of recommendation for an applicant for a German Chancellor Fellowship, we would be grateful if you would use the form for letters of recommendation. Please answer all the questions so that we can do full justice to the applicant in the selection process.

Your letter of recommendation will be treated confidentially during the whole selection process.

Information on the sponsorship criteria relating to German Chancellor Fellowships can be found in the Programme Information. The Humboldt Foundation can only initiate the selection procedure once your letter of recommendation has been received. We therefore recommend that you prepare your statement with an official letterhead and your signature, then scan and upload it to the application in the corresponding secure area as soon as possible after having been informed by the applicant and before the closing date (15 September). The applicant will send you the link to this area by email.

If for compelling reasons it is not possible for you to upload your letter of recommendation by the application deadline (15 September), you can send the document promptly by email to the Humboldt Foundation (info(at)

If we should not receive the document in a timely manner, we reserve the right to formally reject the application.
