Family benefits

If you as a research fellow are accompanied by your partner and/or underage children for at least three uninterrupted months during the funding period, the Humboldt Foundation will provide you with a family allowance. You may also apply for a subsidy towards the cost of medical and liability insurance for your accompanying partner and/or children under the age of 18.

Family benefits for partners

  • You are married, in a registered partnership or raising children together in a shared household (including during your stay in Germany).
  • If you are entering Germany without a visa, you must present a copy of your marriage certificate or documentation proving your partnership.
  • Your spouse must stay with you in Germany for at least three uninterrupted months.
  • Your spouse’s monthly income must not exceed the current earnings level for employees not subject to social insurance (EUR 538).
  • If you are accompanied by children under the age of 15 months, separate conditions apply regarding eligibility for the family allowance for spouses. For further information please see the information sheet "Family allowance for partners" (PDF).

Family benefits for children

  • Your children are under the age of 18 and staying in Germany with you for a period of at least three uninterrupted months.
  • If the children are entering Germany without a visa, copies of their birth certificates must be provided.
  • Substitutional payment for child benefit: please only request a substitutional payment for child benefit if you are not formally entitled to child benefit under German law, or after your application for child benefit has been rejected by the German authorities.
    You must prove that your application was rejected by submitting copies of the rejection letter from the German authorities and the fellow’s residence permit.

Substitutional payment for child benefit to the value of EUR 250 per child per month:

The application is valid for all family benefits listed above with the exception of the subsidy towards the cost of comprehensive health insurance (PDF).
