While the world practices social distancing and borders are closed to contain a virus, multilateral collaboration and internationalization – for centuries an imperative of higher education and research – faces unprecedented difficulties. All of a sudden, the globalized research community needs to defend itself against tendencies to re-nationalize research, and our practices of knowledge transfer, cooperation, exchange, and tackling global challenges are subject to change. How are researchers around the world experiencing their current situation? How might we rethink networks and partnerships? And what lessons are we learning right now that can help us establish even stronger networks for the future?

We invite you to join us for this one-hour conversation – from our homes and across all time zones. Share a community moment with fellow researchers and academic administrators worldwide, bring your experiences to the table, and discuss the research networks of tomorrow.

Prof. Verena Blechinger-Talcott, Vice President International at Freie Universität Berlin, and Dr. Thomas Hesse, Deputy Secretary General of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation will be in conversation with

  • Prof. Dr. Gloria Chicote, PI at the Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America (Mecila), Brazil / Argentina, and former Georg Forster Research Fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at Cologne University
  • Dr. Esra Demir-Gürsel, Georg Forster Research Fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at Freie Universität and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin’s Faculty of Law, Germany
  • Prof. Dr. Cynthia Miller-Idriss, Director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) at the American University, USA, and former Chancellor Fellow of the Humboldt Foundation at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin
