The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is legally responsible foundation under private law with a statutory mission to promote science and research as well as intercultural understanding.

The Humboldt Foundation is financed by the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection as well as additional national and international partners with whom it cooperates. The Foundation chiefly finances its expenditure for the purpose of fulfilling its mission on the basis of grants from the Federal Government.
