Ranking of the countries of origin of Humboldt fellows and awardees published

The USA as an example: Where are Humboldtians based?

Every year, the Humboldt Foundation funds research stays in Germany for 2,000 foreign scientists and scholars. Its network counts more than 29,000 alumni in over 140 countries.

The recently published Humboldt Geography of Knowledge shows the countries and institutions from which the greatest number of applicants and nominees selected by the Humboldt Foundation have come from in the last five years and where Humboldt alumni are conducting research today.

In the last five years, most of the researchers sponsored by the Humboldt Foundation came from the USA (673), China (498), India (231) and Great Britain (226).

The list of the home institutions and universities is topped by institutions belonging to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (home to 70 Humboldtians), followed by the University of Oxford (45) and the University of Cambridge (41).

The largest number of Humboldt alumni currently conduct research in the USA (5,091), Japan (1,725) and China (1,650).

“International research relations are shifting. Most of the research fellowships and awards granted by the Foundation go to scientists from the USA. However, China is becoming more and more important”, Humboldt Foundation Secretary General Enno Aufderheide noted in his evaluation of the Geography of Knowledge. “Our figures also show which institutions around the world are particularly attractive for our alumni researchers after they have completed their research stay in Germany. In this connection, the USA continues to be the dream destination of most Humboldtians”, Aufderheide reported.
