The Humboldt Foundation is inviting applications for a second chair at AIMS Senegal in Mbour. Applications are open to postdoctoral mathematicians from throughout the world who have produced internationally outstanding research findings and have several years of experience teaching and conducting research. Applicants are to conduct applied research on topics that could make a contribution to the development of the African continent. The closing date for applications is 1 April 2022. Further information regarding the programme and the online application form are available on the Humboldt Foundation website.

Seven German Research Chairs already appointed

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is strengthening research and university education in the field of mathematics in Africa through the German Research Chairs programme which is financed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Applications for the original German Research Chair at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Senegal were invited for the first time in 2011: The Senegalese Moustapha Fall was appointed to this chair.

To date, the Humboldt Foundation has established seven chairs at AIMS Centres in Ghana, Cameroon, Ruanda, South Africa and Senegal. The creation of these chairs will promote networking between the individual AIMS Centres in Africa and between these centres and their German partners on a long-term basis. The funding period for the chairs — which each receive €835,000 — is six years. A further research chair for Mathematics and its Applications is being planned for an AIMS Centre.
