Mathematics for the benefit of the country and its people: Since 2016, Olivier Pamen has held the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s “German Research Chair in Mathematics and its Applications” at AIMS Ghana. Amongst others, he has developed a mathematical model that helps small businesses to get microcredits.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is strengthening research and university education in the field of mathematics in Africa through the German Research Chairs programme which is financed by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Further research chairs for Mathematics and its Applications will be appointed at centres of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in the coming years. The funding period for these chairs - which each receive €835,000 in funding - has been extended from originally four years to now six years.

Applications invited for new chair at the AIMS Centre in Ghana

The Humboldt Foundation is inviting applications for a new chair at AIMS Ghana in Accra. Applications are open to postdoctoral mathematicians from throughout the world who have produced internationally outstanding research findings and have several years of experience teaching and conducting research. Applicants are to conduct application-related research on topics that could make a contribution to the development of the African continent.

The closing date for applications is 1 June 2021. Further information regarding the programme and application modalities is available on the Humboldt Foundation website.

Five German Research Chairs already appointed

To date, the Humboldt Foundation has established five chairs at various AIMS Centres in Africa, including one at AIMS Ghana. The creation of these chairs will promote networking between the individual AIMS Centres in Africa and between these centres and their German partners on a long-term basis.
